White space

Use of White Space in Design

We were asked to create a press kit design for the Kingston Paint Company using white space in our design.
I came up with this new logo and a simple design for the press kit featuring brush stokes which were repeated on the inside.

Single colour design

Single Colour Leaflet Design

We were given the task of creating a leaflet in one colour with the content supplied.
To achieve this, I first converted my images to greyscale in photoshop, then selected duotone and chose my desired pantone colour. Following this, I created my design in Indesign and worked with the same pantone colour in various tints and opacity. Below are two possible outcomes, both in one colour.

Visual Communication Advert

We were given a brief to create a poster to encourage young people to give blood.
I started by sketching out a couple of ideas and after feed-back from my group, produced a sample of the strongest concept. I decided to focus on the aspect of how quick and easy it is to give blood because I think this is one of the things that would hinder young people from doing so. I used illustrator to create the poster below. I feel that the colour scheme and simplistic diagrams are effective for the purpose.

Illustrator Shield

I created this using Illustrator. I wasn't very happy with the final outcome but it gave me an opportunity to practice using some of the illustrator tools.

Paris Trip - Inspiration

During our recent Paris trip I photographed examples of typography, book covers, patterns and illustrations that I particularly liked. Here are some of my favourites which may provide inspiration for future pieces of work.

Church Christmas Leaflet

My local church asked me to design something for the front of their Christmas leaflet.
I experimented with different images and texts to create different layouts to present to them. They chose the layout on the bottom left.

Menu Layout

I worked on this menu layout for an Italian restaurant. I have used a checked background to look like a table cloth in the traditional Italian flag colours.

A friend asked me to create a baby shower invitation for her. I began by looking for examples of similar work that I liked (see top images). I liked the vibrant colours, simplistic illustrations, handwritten typography styles and also the striking black outlines on the first illustration. Based on my inspiration, I created this image of a baby (named 'mini Nicky', the mother's name), using illustrator and played around with different ways of laying out the image and text. I chose a background of pink and blue because the gender of the baby is not known. In the end we chose to use the 4th design (bottom, right) because it was the simplest of the designs and perhaps the most modern.

Magazine Layouts - Double Page Spreads

I worked on these double page magazine spreads within the restrictions given.
I feel that the last three are most effective due to the use of white space.

Typology Experiments

I came up with this variation of a common typeface by tearing the paper and drawing on the letters with a black pen. Some of the effects were more effective than others.

I created this example of Found Typography with a fashion theme. I used clothing, scarves and various accessories to create this piece, I deliberately chose bright, contracting objects and backgrounds (in an Andy Warhol style) to create a fun, retro alphabet. I edited the final image to brighten up the colours even further.
I could imagine this being used in a teen or fashion magazine.

Polygon Experiment in Photoshop
I created this image of the queen in Photoshop using polygons.
I decided to use a union jack flag as a background,
slightly transparent so as not to overpower the main image.

Image and type

Experimenting with image, type and colour

Poster 1: For this design I chose to emphasise the word 'personalities' by making it the largest element on the page, breaking it into two and choosing an unusual font which has personality! The quote also talks about different personalities so the typeface lent itself to this because each character is slightly different. I chose not to use much colour in this design because I wanted the usual typeface to be the focal point and I didn't want to distract from this.

Poster 2: I chose a simple approach for this poster because the font is simple and minimalistic in style and I wanted this to be emphasised. I chose to put the type down the left hand side for clarity and to balance the design.

Poster 3: I chose two fonts with character to reinforce the message of the quote. The feminine pink was chosen for the same reason.

Poster 4: I wanted a fairly simple font with a slight twist, so this was a good font choice. I chose to put each word on a new lines, which gives it an added dimension of interest because the words are all varying lengths.
I chose to put a black background so that the text would stand out better.

Poster 5: I made a decision to align the text in the bottom right hand corner of the design because your eyes are naturally drawn from the man's eyes to that corner of the page. I chose to emphasise two of the strongest words 'sweat' and 'sacrifice' using a bold red. Red symbolises action which works well with this particular quote and also the image which shows someone who may have been doing some kind of sport. I added a drop shadow to the text to help the white font to stand out on the cream background.

Poster 6: The two focal points of my design are the man's eyes and the word 'forgive' which creates a lot of emotion. I chose a very simple font to compliment the simple black and white image and to keep your attention of the focal points. The key word has been outlined for impact and the text all aligned to create a simple but effective design.
